Decreasing Stress and Increasing Productivity

Reflecting on my work years prior to venturing into the world of entrepreneurship, what I clearly remember is the stress.

The stress of the traffic. The stress of the deadlines and the stress of navigating the waters of change. Weekends were great. I made good use of the money that I earned but I did not take too much time off without feeling guilty or obsessing about the amount of work that was awaiting my return.

It appears that I am not alone.

Workplace stress is the top cause of all stress in the U.S. and has been estimated to cost businesses $300B per year in absenteeism, turnover and decreased productivity. And, it is not getting any better. A majority of employees believe they have more on-the-job-stress than their parents did. American employees work more hours, take less time off AND are no more productive than our European counterparts.

Why are American workers less satisfied and more stressed? Why are we working more AND producing less?

It seems there has been a few changes in the American workplace:

1. Advancement in communication technology: Most individuals rely on emails and texts to communicate and keep their smart phones with them at all times. The belief that we have “instant communication” also means we also expect “instant responses.” How many moments have you interrupted in order to answer a text or an email that could wait for an hour or two? A 2007 New York Times article found that the loss of productivity and innovation as a result of social media interruptions cost businesses $650B per year.

2. Work-Life Integration: The Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm work week has become a thing of the past. The new 24/7 mindset makes it more difficult for employees to disconnect from work and enjoy quality “down time” with their family and friends. We call it Work-Life Integration because sometimes, we need to work more and sometimes we need to rest more. It’s about integrating versus thinking we can perfectly balance every hour or every day.

3. Lack of support from the organization: Nearly half of all workers report they need help in learning how to manage stress and want their companies to do more to promote employee wellness (Randstad, 2006). Not surprisingly, companies with health and wellness programs returned an average of $3.50 for every dollar spent (Washington Post, 2007; The Journal of Health Affairs, 2010).

As busy professionals we seldom have big blocks of free time. Whether it’s developing a new launch or dealing with necessary changes. Time is an increasingly valuable commodity.
