corporate culture change

A meaningful organizational culture is a zeitgeist way of thinking and being.

Corporate culture affects many aspects of life in and out of the workplace, because when you’re fulfilled at work, you’re happier at home. A company that maintains a strong corporate culture exhibits strong leadership behaviors such as;

  • taking 100% responsibility for your impact
  • being authentic
  • the ability to communicate proactively
  • knowing when to challenge the status quo and the ability influence employees to stay focused on top priorities

All which create a culture that positively impacts a company’s profits, employee engagement and brand reputation.

An important part of creating a strong culture requires a shared vision, a customer centric mission statement and clear success measures. Developing the desired company culture requires planning, a solid understanding of customer and stakeholders’ needs, and how the company products and or services fulfill those needs. When key influencers within the organization understand how their strengths support the culture, they can more fully contribute to long lasting change.

Once a consensus of the desired culture satisfies the needs of key stakeholders, that definition can be incorporated into the company hiring process, described in leadership competencies, (identifying how people are expected to act) and the performance management process that help reinforce the culture evolution. Every moving part has its place in contributing to the desired culture – the customers define the needs, the employees provide products and services that exceed the competition, and leadership facilitates and enables the whole process.

We could easily say that burnout, lack of work-life balance, employee dissatisfaction, and under-performance is the definite lack of a consistent and workable culture. As a leader of your company, you can learn how to cultivate a stronger company culture.

However, be warned.

A company culture change not done properly the first time, can create skepticism and loss of credibility for the leadership team ensuing new attempts. While most leaders will easily agree that corporate culture is a major factor in the success of a company, leadership must be willing to be open and vulnerable and avoid taking it on without seeking a qualified objective observer to help set the stage for long term success.
